Accellos Consortium
Develops RFID Slap and Ship Capability
July 05, 2007
Colorado Springs, CO - Logistics solutions
provider Accellos has announced the completion of a radio frequency identification initiative with its RFID consortium, addressing
the emerging RFID requirements of the third-party logistics (3PL) market in the freezer, cooler and dry warehousing environments.
The purpose of the project was to develop RFID "slap and ship" capability that would meet the compliance
requirements of specific retailers, according to Accellos, which offers warehouse, 3PL, logistics, transportation and mobile
fleet management solutions.
Accellos' RFID consortium, a "best of breed" group comprised of manufacturers,
operators and system integrators, offered a unique approach to enhancing the Accellos Enterprise 3PL product, with each member
of the consortium having an equal vote in all project-related decisions.
The consortium was set up as a separate
business entity, complete with a separate bank account to hold funds invested by consortium members. A charter was developed
to clearly outline the defined goals and objectives, a formal board was developed, and meetings were scheduled on a regular
basis to report on progress and issues encountered.
"It was a very enriching experience to work with the consortium
members to develop the RFID operational capabilities of the Accellos Enterprise 3PL product, and it was a unique approach
that proved to be very successful in the end," said Joe Couto, senior vice president at Accellos. "The consortium
members had incredible insight into the future functionality requirements of this attribute that aided Accellos in developing
the feature."
The RFID consortium's mission was to advance the application and effectiveness of the new
generation of warehouse tracking and retrieval technology in the controlled-temperature 3PL sector of the supply chain. Accellos
spearheaded the effort as well as provided its Accellos Enterprise 3PL logistics management software for the consortium's
two full-sized, live production laboratories, located at Confederation Freezers, Brampton, Ontario, and at Richmond Cold Storage,
Richmond, Va.
"Being a participant in the RFID consortium has been a very positive experience," said
Joe Knausdorf, IT director with Richmond Cold Storage and member of the consortium. "It was very rewarding to know that
the member's experience and knowledge had an impact and a voice about the application's development."
Technology members included LXE, Psion Teklogix, End-to-End Group, Intermec Technologies Corporation, CapTech Ventures and
bayMountain. Logistics operator members include Confederation Freezers, Richmond Cold Storage, Hopewell Distribution Services
and Versa Cold Holding Corp., all major operators of freezer and controlled temperature 3PL warehouse facilities in North
America.
