GPS units an easy target
for thieves

POLICE are calling for public support to help combat a rise in thefts
of global positioning system (GPS) units in the West.
Sergeant Ian Brown of Footscray’s proactive programs
unit said the systems appeared to be an easy target for thieves.
“We’ve seen an increase in thefts
of GPS units from cars in the western suburbs.
“They are popular items to steal and people are not taking
the necessary steps to protect them,” he said.
Sgt Brown said it appeared thieves targeted cars after noticing
the suction cup mount on the front window.
Police encouraged drivers not to leave the unit under the seat or in
the glovebox and instead to take it with them or lock it in the boot when they left their vehicles. “If possible, remove
the window mount,” Sgt Brown said.
Residents are urged to mark their GPS units with a V for Victoria followed
by their driver’s licence number in an ultraviolet pen.
Police identification stickers are also available
from Sgt Brown at Footscray Police Station on 8398 9841.
Sgt Brown said some units had a locking system that rendered
them inoperable, and encouraged the use of these.
“I encourage the locking system be activated, every time
the vehicle is unattended,” he said.
Police said it is also important to remove all valuable property from
vehicles when they are unattended.
“If this is impossible, lock items in the boot at a location before parking
the car.
“Do not make your car a target for a criminal,” Sgt Brown added.
