Turn Your Cell Phone
into a GPS Assistant
July 16, 2007
There are many great free services available to assist you
while you're on the road, but one of the most useful I've seen so far turns your cell phone into a personal GPS assistant.
You could always print directions before you leave the house, but if you're already on the road you now have an option
to call 347-328-4667 (or dial DIR-ECT-IONS if you forget) for a text message with turn-by-turn directions. The service is
called Dial Directions, recently launched for those living in Los Angeles, New York City, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
The service itself is easy to use. You dial the number, provide the voice-activated system your location and destination,
and before the call is over, a text message is sent to your phone with driving directions. Dial Directions is a free service,
although a short ad may be tagged at the end of each text message. What I like about the service is the ability to also find
chain stores such as Starbucks, Target, Trader Joe's, or Shell Gas stations within your area. This is one handy feature
when you're traveling, and one even a GPS system doesn't always provide.
I used the service to get directions
to a nearby Target store, and was very impressed with the voice-recognition system that worked flawlessly. I never had to
repeat myself, and it quickly found four stores within driving distance of my house. I highly recommend this service to anyone
out there who doesn't have an in-car car GPS.
