Skyhook Wireless Receives Web 2.0 Enabler Award for Its Wi-Fi Positioning System at the 2007 MITX Technology Awards

June 07, 2007

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Skyhook Wireless, Inc. was awarded an Impact Award for Web 2.0 Enabler at the 2007 MITX Technology Awards. The MITX Technology Awards, presented by the Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange, recognize innovative technologies developed in the New England area, as well as the individuals and organizations responsible for driving these advancements. Honorees for this year’s awards were announced last night in a ceremony at The Four Season’s Hotel in Boston.

“We have been extremely impressed with the breadth and quality of the nominations this year. They show incredible innovation across a variety of sectors and highlight the vitality of our local technology community,” said Kiki Mills, executive director of MITX. “As we continue to enjoy a surge in technology investments in New England, we are proud to showcase the contributions our community is making to global technology development.”

The Web 2.0 Enabler award recognizes an innovative technology product or service from any Application Category that has made a significant impact leveraging Web 2.0 by delivering or deploying the technology applications as a service and/or sharing and distributing content. Skyhook Wireless’ Wi-Fi Positioning System (WPS) is the first wide area positioning system to utilize Wi-Fi rather than GPS or cell-tower technologies to pinpoint location. This means that for any Wi-Fi enabled device it takes seconds to produce an accurate reading; the more congested the city and whether indoors or out, the better it works; it requires no additional hardware so it’s easy and inexpensive to deploy; and it can work with GPS to enhance its capabilities and achieve near 100 percent availability of accurate positioning.

“Skyhook Wireless has been at the forefront of levering the burgeoning Wi-Fi infrastructure and advanced Internet technologies to bring location-based services to the masses,” said Jed Rice, vice president of market development, Skyhook Wireless. “WPS today serves as the Wi-Fi positioning backbone of some of the world’s most recognizable services and devices, including AOL’s AIM, ReignCom’s iriver W10 portable media player, and SiRF’s Multi-Mode Location Platform. We are pleased to be the recipient of this prestigious award from MITX.”

More than 200 of the region’s top technology and business professionals attended the MITX Awards ceremony. The event also included a keynote address by Tim Berners-Lee, director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), who was inducted into the MITX Innovation Hall of Fame last night, as well as a panel forum on “What’s Next for the Device Web – Emerging User Experiences.” For a complete list of winners please visit www.mitxawards.org/technologyawards/finalists_winners.aspx?year=2007.
