Telus extends location
based services to Quebec
June 06, 2007
Telus announced today that customers in more than 40
Quebec communities can now subscribe to the company's Navigator and Kid Find global positioning services (GPS).
Telus says these GPS services leverage the accuracy of traditional GPS technology with its network based location technology
to give subscribers reliable location fixes in a wide variety of surroundings, including indoor and outdoor environments.
Telus Navigator is a handset based service that provides real-time audio and visual turn-by-turn directions similar
to in-car navigation systems. Customers use their handset to plan their route ahead and or they can from search for destinations
from over 1.5 million points of interest. Similar to in-car navigation systems, if you miss a turn, the service will automatically
re-route to ensure they get back on track.
Kid find is for subscribers who wish to keep tabs on other family members
who are all on the same mobile phone account. Users can track family members through their mobile phone or on a web page on
the Telus site. Interactive maps allow users to zoom in and out to see their family members' location relative to landmarks.
Individuals being located by the kid find service will be notified by a flashing GPS indicator on their mobile phone's
screen each time a location request is sent to their phone. Telus markets the Kid Find service as a way to keep track of your
children; however, parents should be aware that the service can be defeated by simply shutting the handset off or disabling
the GPS status.
The Navigator and Kid Find GPS service will cost you an additional $10 and $5 per month respectively.
You will also need to pay a one-time $0.50 download fee for each service.
The Navigator and Kid Find service are
now be available in 40 Quebec communities including Gatineau, the Greater Montreal area, Sherbrooke, the Greater Quebec City
area, Saint-Georges, Rimouski, Baie-Comeau and Sept-îles.
