Lynnwood Neighborhood Plagued By Brazen Thieves
June 02, 2007
Lynnwood, Washington -- Unlike a cell phone or an iPod that you often take with you when
you leave your car, Global Positioning Satellite Systems are usually left inside the car because they are supposed to help
you get from A to B. It's now become a hot item among thieves.
A Snohomish County neighborhood has become the
target of car prowlers looking for the GPS devices. The break-ins have all occurred on one residential street, a culdesac
occupied by thirteen homes.
According to neighborhood resident Joe Walters, "They were in and out in ten seconds.
You know, it was smash the window, I jumped up, hollered and he was already running down the road."
Mr. Walters
thought that he had scared off the thief from stealing his S-U-V, but the next day, the thief got exactly what he was after,
a GPS system.
"They can't be too smart because the door was unlocked. They didn't even check to see
if the door was unlocked. They smashed the window and grabbed it.
The neighbor two doors down had his brand new
GPS stolen as well.
Walters told KIRO TV that the day before the break-ins his kids saw a car driving slowly down
the street. He and the other residents believe that the people inside were casing the area. Now neighbors are keeping their
eyes peeled for anyone suspicious. Their concern is that the crimes could become something even bigger.
"If
they're going to come up into this area, this little teeny area, they're going to other places too, and they could
be part of a bigger ring."
Joe Walters says he filed a police report, but couldn't identify the thieves
other than to say they were two young white men, driving a small black car.
Anyone with information should call
the Lynnwood Police Department.
