RALEIGH, NC – rPath, a Raleigh-based provider of software appliance technology, announced that its rBuilder platform has been selected by Boston, MA-based Newbury Networks. Newbury will use rBuilder to help deliver its Newbury Location Appliance to its enterprise customers.

Newbury focuses on enabling enterprises to locate, manage, and secure applications running over wireless LANs. Using the company’s 802.11 device tracking capabilities, the Newbury Location Appliance locates Wi-Fi devices while enabling enterprise applications such as asset tracking, voice, security, and network provisioning. With rBuilder, the company states that it was able to shorten the time needed for the development process from months to weeks.

"The appliance form factor is the industry standard for rapid deployment," said Billy Marshall, CEO of rPath. "The simplicity of the software appliance approach allows innovative application companies like Newbury Networks to get their products to market quickly with maximum channel uptake."

A software appliance combines a software application and a streamlined version of system software that installs on hardware, usually a server. A type of SaaS (Software as a Service), a software appliance not only allows for rapid deployment, but also eliminates the need to manage multiple maintenance streams since the customer receives all service and maintenance directly from the vendor. Such is the case with rPath’s rBuilder, which streamlines the maintenance of appliances through online updates.

"Once we selected Linux for the appliance, we realized the need to maintain the operating system in addition to providing administrative tools and software updates for our customers and partners," said Michael Maggio, president and CEO of Newbury Networks, Inc. "We were confident rBuilder along with the rPath Appliance Agent (rAA) could accomplish this, while also supporting branded versions of the builds for our OEM partners."

rPath was founded in 2005 by Erik Troan, the former VP of Engineering at Red Hat, and Billy Marshall, former VP of North America Sales at Red Hat. The company was commercially launched in January 2006 and maintains corporate HQ in Raleigh, North Carolina.
